Zero-to-Hero AI Bootcamp Results in US$2 Million Cost Savings for a High-Tech Manufacturer in Penang

Client Overview

A high-tech multinational corporation (MNC) in Penang, Malaysia, sought to equip its workforce with advanced data and AI skills. This initiative supported their Industry 4.0 roadmap, which aimed to enhance operational efficiency, optimise processes, and drive innovation.

Zero-to-Hero AI Bootcamp

Objective

The goal was to provide employees with data science and AI capabilities through a six-month bootcamp. The program included both introductory courses (Python, Data Engineering, Data Storytelling) and advanced modules (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, and Time Series Analysis).

Problem Statement

In addition to the training, the client required hands-on application of these skills. We collaborated with them on six AI pilot projects, ranging from video analytics for detecting potential equipment crashes to using computer vision for defect classification and production planning optimisation.

Solution

The participants applied their training across six pilot projects. For example, traditional defect detection relied heavily on engineers’ expertise to interpret and classify defects. In the new AI-powered solution, deep learning was used to detect defects, while machine learning classified them by analyzing historical data and product images, enhancing accuracy and efficiency

Results / Benefits

The six pilot projects demonstrated potential cost savings (or cost avoidance) of US$2 million annually for just one plant. With plans to scale these solutions across multiple Southeast Asian locations, the client anticipates even greater savings and operational efficiencies.
